Slovenia, town and country

If you took a weekend break in Slovenia and didn’t leave Ljubljana you’d be missing out on a beautiful rural country of hills and valleys, meadows and forests, and one charming port town on its very short coastline!

Our arrival in Slovenia was pretty promising - the lovely port of Piran

Tartini, renowned violinist in his day, perhaps candidate for most famous Slovenian?

Piran is everything a Mediterranean sea town should be

We enjoyed exploring the maze of streets behind the seafront

St George's church overlooks the town with its grand campanile

Inside the church, very Italian influenced

We climbed up the old fortifications and were rewarded with one last view of Piran

Our one fine dining expedition, the cosy wine cellar of Gostilna Pri Lojzetu

Next day we were exploring villages in the karst country

A view of Slovenian life you don't see on a weekend break in Ljubljana

Next stop, the huge cavern carved out by this river

The karst is wine country, and very good wine at that

This church perches above the enormous hole in the ground where the Reka river runs

Eventually of course we ended up in lovely Ljubljana

Seriously, has no-one noticed the dragon? It's surely going to eat someone

The morning market in Ljubljana, lovely veggies!

The city was the only place in our trip with anything like modern eating options

Next day and we're off into the mountains at Lake Bohinj

A morning walk down the Vintgar Gorge

And an afternoon walk down the Mostnice Gorge

Mind you, it can be tricky sharing the path with locals

The Mostnice Gorge. Most nice. Geddit?

Rambling back through the villages of the alpine valleys

Last evening back in Ljubljana, we visited the castle

It's a long way to the top, but the views into the sunset were worth it

Slovenia is an effortless place to visit, rather like walking on air - loved it
